GMAT Focus Edition Scores: How the 205–805 Scale Works

The GMAT Focus Edition uses a new scale that doesn't match the old one. Here's how to read it.

If you have read older GMAT advice, the numbers on the GMAT Focus Edition can be confusing. A 705 on the Focus Edition is not the same as a 705 on the old exam. This guide explains the current scale and how to set a target.

The total score

Total scores range from 205 to 805, and every score ends in 5. The total is built from your three section scores — Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights — which each count equally.

Section scores

Each section is scored from 60 to 90. Because all three count equally, a weak Data Insights score pulls your total down as much as weak Quant would. That is a change from the old exam, where integrated reasoning did not affect the main score.

Percentiles matter more than raw numbers

Schools often think in percentiles. Because Focus Edition scores run lower than old-format scores for the same percentile, compare like with like: use the score data your target schools publish for the Focus Edition.

Setting your target

  1. List your target schools and find their published Focus Edition averages or ranges.
  2. Aim for the middle or upper part of that range for your strongest schools.
  3. Take a diagnostic to find your starting point, then plan the hours you need to close the gap.
