MAT vs CAT: Who Should Take MAT?

MAT and CAT serve different goals. Many students take both.

CAT and MAT are both used for MBA and PGDM admissions in India, but they suit different goals. Here is how they compare.

How often they are held

CAT is held once a year. MAT is conducted several times a year by AIMA, which gives you more chances and more flexibility on timing.

Pattern and pace

CAT has three sections with fixed 40-minute windows. MAT has 150 questions across five sections in 120 minutes with no sectional time limits, so it is much faster-paced. MAT also includes an Economic and Business Environment section.

Difficulty and schools

CAT is generally harder and is required by the IIMs and many top schools. MAT is accepted by a large number of management schools across India. Check which test each school on your list accepts.

Who should take MAT

  • Students targeting schools that accept MAT.
  • CAT aspirants who want a backup option.
  • Students who missed the CAT window or want to apply sooner.
